Liberia: Executive Mansion Refutes Criticism of Luxury SUV Purchase for President Boakai

MONROVIA — The Executive Mansion has clarified the recent purchase of two 2025 Lexus LX 700HR Super Ultra Luxury SUVs for President Joseph Boakai, attributing the decision to a recommendation from the Executive Protection Service (EPS).

During a regular press briefing on Friday, April 4, Presidential Press Secretary Kula Fofana, explained that the purchase was made due to the poor condition of the vehicles handed over by the previous administration. She said the EPS had recommended the acquisition of new vehicles after the frequent breakdowns of the President’s convoy, which had caused several public embarrassments.

“The President’s vehicles broke down while he was returning from Grand Cape Mount County last year after attending the National County Sports Meet,” Fofana stated. “This highlighted the urgent need for more reliable vehicles to ensure the President’s safety and facilitate smooth travel.”

Fofana refrained from disclosing the exact cost of the two new vehicles, stating that such details are under the jurisdiction of the EPS. She also addressed concerns regarding the timing and cost of the luxury SUVs, stating, “I don’t know why people are complaining because when President Boakai leaves office, he will turn over everything to the next administration. These cars are for the Presidency, not for President Boakai’s personal use.”

The purchase of the luxury SUVs had attracted significant media and social media attention, sparking controversy and criticism, particularly from political activist Martin K. N. Kollie, who posted on March 28, 2025, under the title “Opulence.” Kollie raised questions about the cost and timing of the acquisition. Despite the outcry, Fofana maintained that the vehicles were a necessity for the President’s security and operations, emphasizing that the purchase was made with the best interests of the President’s safety in mind.
